💐About the Art:
“Maternity” is the eleventh drawing in my steampunk inspired Mannequin series. This body of work is very dear to my heart. It uses color pencil drawings of mannequin figures to demonstrate different kinds of deep emotions and emotional situations. The concept of this particular piece came to me when I was pregnant with my first child. There is something incredibly marvelous about growing a human being inside of your own body. Children are a precious blessing, and I wanted to showcase the beauty of that in this drawing. Like my other mannequin designs, this one is also laced with various kinds of symbolism. I drew a nest in the mannequin’s hair because pregnant women often get the desire to clean and put their house in order before their baby is born, a desire known as “nesting”. Nails keep the mannequin’s skirt on to represent the pain in childbirth. I purposefully made this aspect of the piece subtle, as I feel like the joy and honor of creating, growing, and bringing a new life into the world overshadows the temporary pain involved. I hope the viewers of my piece get a positive and intimate glimpse into the experience of bearing children.
