About the Art
“Maternity” is the eleventh drawing in my steampunk inspired Mannequin series. This body of work is very personal to me. It uses colored pencil drawings of mannequin figures to demonstrate different kinds of deep emotions and emotional situations. The concept of this particular piece came to me when I was pregnant with my first child. There is something incredibly marvelous about growing a human being inside of your own body. Children are a precious blessing, and I wanted to showcase the beauty of that. Like my other mannequin designs, this one is also laced with various kinds of symbolism. For example, a bird’s nest represents the maternal “nesting” instinct. I hope those who view this piece get a positive and intimate glimpse into the experience of childbearing.
