About the Art:
“Shyness” is the seventh drawing in my steampunk inspired Mannequin series that represents different emotions and emotional subjects. I like to incorporate lots of symbolism in my mannequin color pencil drawings and this one is no different. My idea behind the mannequin being displayed on a pedestal was that shy people often feel as though everyone is watching them. Shy people might also feel exposed which is why this mannequin is draped in see-through fabric. I used a birdcage and opera glasses to show the desire to hide from people but at same time observe them, something that I think is common for those of us who are shy. My favorite hidden detail is that the mannequin wears a broach on her skirt featuring the sensitive plant or mimosa pudica (pudica is Latin for “modest”) which is a nod to Victorian floriography.
